Why did early flash photography frequently result in the "red-eye" effect in portraits?

You might think it's a camera malfunction, but the reality is that the flash happens so fast your pupils can't constrict in time. Intense light hits the back of your eye, reflecting the blood-rich retina back into the lens, creating that eerie, glowing red result. It is essentially a biological mirror effect caught on film.
